Congrats to all on our successful fundraiser for Girls on the Run of Greater Milwaukee! After much effort, we all enjoyed a great evening while we raised $6700 for Girls on the Run. The event called Dance the Night Away included dancing, great food and drink, a cork pull, silent auction and more. Thanks to the many local individuals and businesses that contributed to our efforts and the money will be used by Girls on the Run to purchase equipment for girls who participate in the program.  The program is more than running; it provides girls with guidance on good health and making smart choices.

Special thanks to Big Bay Brewing Company, Radio 88.9, Breadsmith, Brueggers, Divine Consign, Elements Therapeutic Massage, First Stage Children’s Theater, Fitness Together, Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, Herb Kohl Charities, Hi Hat restaurant, Hounds Around Town, Innovative Exteriors Landscaping, Just JOY!, Koss Corporation, Lakefront Brewery, Le Club Sports Club, Milwaukee Irish Fest, North Shore Dance Studio, North Star Bistro, Pat McCurdy, Patricia Shoppe, Performance Running Outfitters, Placesetters, Salto Gymnastics & Dance Studio, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Spice House, Sprecher, Starbucks Coffee of Whitefish Bay, Stray Voltage, Susan Fredman Design Group, The Melting Pot, Thief Wine Shop and Bar, Trader Joes, Usingers, Vera Bradley, Winkie’s and all our sponsors and supporters.

Girls on the Run of Milwaukee

Posted in Uncategorized by karenmathu on February 29, 2012

Yay!! Our club is excited to be raising money for Girls on the Run of Milwaukee. We are planning an event for Saturday night, March 31, 2012 called Dance the Night Away. The evening includes live music, dancing, great food and drink, a cork pull, silent auction and more. Tickets are $40 and are available through any of our members or email us

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. They combine an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. The curriculum addresses many aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors.

The Milwaukee council has about 10 locations this Spring for young girls. Each location is run by a volunteer head coach and they meet twice a week for about 10-12 weeks. They focus on a series of lessons, and train to run a 5K race. Click here for more info about Girls on the Run of Milwaukee.

We hope you can join us on March 31, 2012. Click here for the invitation to Dance the Night Away.

60 pairs and counting….

Posted in Uncategorized by karenmathu on January 24, 2012

Our service collection tonight was socks!! Socks? Why socks?

The GFWC Sock Project helps domestic violence survivors “Step Away From Abuse” by working with domestic violence shelters. We collected over 60 pairs of new socks and will be placing them in clear bags with a personalized message of support and encouragement from our club. It reads: “As you begin your new life and Step Away from Abuse, we hope you will find comfort and warmth as you walk into your newly found freedom.”

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is a national leader in the fight to end domestic violence, and this is one small way our club — along with clubs throughout the U.S. — helps to support these efforts.

If you still want to donate socks, get them to Karen M. by this Thursday. If you want to join in the fun of packaging them, stop by her home Friday morning at 10 a.m.

City Tins Fundraiser

Posted in Uncategorized by karenmathu on November 9, 2011

We are taking orders for 2012 City Tins — these gift tins sell for just $25 and are  filled with $10 coaster gift cards valid toward any purchase of $25 or more at 20 locally owned restaurants! A $200 value! Dine out a couple times, and you have re-couped your cost. These make fun hostess gifts, client appreciation gifts, or a gift to yourself to encourage going out to some of Milwaukee’s great restaurants. New this year is a Madison edition, too!

This is a fundraiser for our club. At the end of each club year, we disburse surplus funds to charity. Last summer, for example, we were able to give $850 to local non-profits including  Dry Hootch, Trees from Home, the Ozaukee Humane Society, St. Ben’s Meal Program, and the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin.

To order, contact any member of our club, or email to order. Last year, these sold out — so order early for holiday giving!

Happy Halloween

A few of us and our kids assisted with a local pumpkin display — a long-standing tradition in Whitefish Bay organized by the civic foundation. Volunteering is simple: light the pumpkins, assist with carving, and anything else that may be needed. This fun, wholesome and incredibly well-run event relies on people to help each evening. This is one of many local events where you will often see our members lending a hand.

We had kids in tow (altogether I think there were 8 of our kids joining us), including Liz’s who have volunteered at this event for YEARS. They are pros. I wanted to snap a photo of our kids working together, but they were pretty busy running around, enjoying the music, climbing up to light the highest pumpkins, and helping in the carving tent. Fun night had by all!
